| Helen
Burkett, originally from Arlington, Virginia;
moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1974, where she maintains her studio. She
attended the University of Maryland, the Corcoran School of Art and various
art study groups. She has studied with Frank Wright of Washington, D.C.,
Valfred Thelin of Ogunquit, Maine, and William Packner of Woodstock, N.Y.
Helen Burkett’s paintings
have won numerous awards and been included in many exhibits in southeastern
United States, including those sponsored by the Southern Watercolor Society,
the Florida Watercolor Society as well as those of the Southeastern Watercolorists,
the Midwest Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and the American
Watercolor Society. She has had many solo shows including a recent exhibit
in Tallahassee at the State Capital Building. Helen actively shows her
work in the outstanding national art festivals, including, the Festival
of the Masters at Lake Buena Vista, FL, Coconut Grove Arts Festival, FL,
Winter Park, FL, Gasparilla in Tampa, FL, KRASL Art Show, St. Joseph, MI,
Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Denver, CO, The Plaza Art Show, Kansas City,
MO, Bonita Springs, FL, and Oconomowoc, WI. Helen and her work were also
the subject of the article “High Contrast Florals” in the American Artist
(July 1996). Ms. Burkett is included in Who’s Who of American Women, 1997-2004;
and Who’s Who in America, 1998-2004.
The main theme of her current
work is an exploration in transparent watercolor of sunlight and shadow
and the rhythm that evolves from the abstract design they create.
Her paintings are found in
many collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, including
Central Florida Community College (Ocala), Epsom Clinic (Orlando), Orlando
Sentinel, Winter Park Memorial Hospital, Polk Museum (Lakeland), Disney
Corporation, Ford Motor Co., Amoco Corp. and the Florida Department of
State, Hayfield Mansion, Louisville, KY, and the Former Princess of Wales. |
